Solid vs. Engineered Hardwood: How to Choose the Right Wood Floor in a Humid Climate

Whether wood cups or gaps in Houston has less to do with the species than with the slab under it. Here is how to choose.

You are not really choosing between two products. You are deciding how much movement your house is going to hand the floor, and which construction can absorb it without telling on you every August.

Wood is a sponge with a grain direction. It takes on moisture from the air and from the concrete under it, swells across its width, then gives that moisture back and shrinks. In Houston, where the air is wet most of the year and the slab underneath sits on clay that rises and falls with the rain, that cycle never really stops. Solid and engineered hardwood respond to it very differently.

What Solid Hardwood Actually Is

One piece of wood, three quarters of an inch thick, milled from a single board. Nothing laminated, nothing layered. The whole plank moves as one.

That is its great strength and its great weakness. Because it is solid all the way through, it can be sanded and refinished many times over a fifty year life. A solid oak floor that looks tired at year fifteen is not a replacement job, it is a refinishing job, and that is a real advantage.

The weakness is that a three quarter inch plank has a lot of width to move across. When humidity climbs, the plank swells and pushes on its neighbors. When it dries out in a heated winter house, it shrinks and leaves gaps you can catch a fingernail in. Over a slab that is also moving, solid wood telegraphs everything.

Solid hardwood also cannot be glued directly to a slab in most cases. It wants to be nailed, which means a plywood subfloor has to be fastened down over the concrete first. That step adds cost and height, and it is the reason most Houston slab homes with wood floors did not get solid wood.

Installed in Houston, solid hardwood generally runs about $8 to $20 a square foot. Species, plank width, and whether a subfloor has to be built first move that band more than anything else.

What Engineered Hardwood Actually Is

A real hardwood wear layer, sawn or sliced, bonded to a plywood or high density core with the grain of each layer running against the one below it. The cross grain construction is the whole point. Each layer fights the movement of the layer next to it, so the plank as a whole barely moves.

This is not a laminate and it is not a picture of wood. The top is the same species you would get in solid. What changes is what is under it.

The number that matters is the wear layer thickness. A two millimeter wear layer is a one refinish floor at best. A three to six millimeter wear layer can be sanded two or three times, which is most of what any homeowner will ever ask of a floor. If a salesperson cannot tell you the wear layer thickness, treat that as the answer.

Engineered wood can be glued directly to a properly prepared slab, floated over an underlayment, or nailed to plywood. That flexibility matters enormously here, because it means the floor does not require an added subfloor.

The Houston Part Nobody Tells You

Most of this region sits on expansive clay. The soil swells when it rains and shrinks when it does not, and the slab on top of it rides that motion. This is why almost no floor in a Houston house is truly flat, and it is why wood flooring here fails for reasons that have nothing to do with the wood.

If the slab has high and low spots, the fix is self levelling underlayment, roughly $3 to $6 a square foot. That is a real line item and it should appear on any honest bid rather than showing up later as a surprise. Poured over a slab that is still actively moving, though, self levelling compound can crack, so flattening is a judgment call rather than a reflex.

Humidity is the other half. A house that runs the air conditioning all summer and heats in January swings its indoor relative humidity considerably. Solid wood answers that swing across every plank. Engineered wood mostly does not.

None of this means solid hardwood is wrong here. It means solid hardwood asks more of the house, and the house has to be able to give it.

When Solid Is Genuinely the Right Answer

If you already have a wood subfloor, on a pier and beam house or a second story, solid hardwood becomes much easier to justify. The nailing surface is already there and the slab question disappears.

If you want site finished wood, meaning it is installed raw, sanded flat in place and finished on site, solid is the traditional path. Site finishing gives you a continuous surface with no micro bevel between planks, which is a look engineered products with factory edges cannot fully copy.

And if you intend to stay in the house thirty years and want the option to change the color twice, the extra refinish life is worth paying for.

When Engineered Is Genuinely the Right Answer

Ground floor over a slab, which describes most of Cypress and northwest Houston. Wide planks, because width multiplies movement and engineered construction cancels it. Rooms that open onto a patio or take a lot of sun. Any house where the humidity swings hard because the family is in and out all day.

Engineered is also the honest choice when the budget is real. Spending less on the wood and more on flattening the slab produces a better floor than the reverse.

How to Actually Choose

Start with the floor you have, not the floor you want. Slab on grade, ground floor, wide plank, hot and humid all summer, and engineered is almost always the better engineering answer here. Wood subfloor, upstairs, narrow to medium planks, and a long horizon, and solid earns its cost.
